Kostelec U Heřmanova Městce: Hotels and Accommodation

The “Church of St Peter and Paul” in Kostelec u Heřmanova Městce is a Romanesque church with a 14th-century Gothic reconstruction. It is a subsidiary church in Kostelec u Heřmanova Městce; its location lies in the foothills of the Železné hory.

Culture and History

The church stands on the site of a former fortress. Earlier defensive ditches and ramparts have been preserved around the church and cemetery. The cemetery includes a Baroque mortuary chapel; the church complex also includes an old bell tower with a bell dating from 1520.

In the apse of the “Church of St Peter and Paul” there is a wall fresco depicting nine of the presumed twelve knights. Kostelec u Heřmanova Městce also contains archaeological traces of a fortified hilltop settlement, a castle rampart with an outer bailey.

Nature and Landscape

The Podolka stream flows through Kostelec u Heřmanova Městce. Blue- and white-marked trails lead from the “Church of St Peter and Paul” through the forest down to the Podolka stream. The easy “V procházkách” trail continues through the wooded valley towards Tasovice.

In the quarry at Kostelec u Heřmanova Městce, traces of the Cenomanian shoreline have been artificially exposed through quarrying. Material from the quarry was used as corrective raw material for cement production in nearby Prachovice.
