Dolní Újezd is situated in gently hilly terrain on both sides of the Desná Valley.
History and architectural heritage
The village is home to the single-nave parish Church of St. Martin. It was originally a Romanesque gallery church from the first half of the 13th century. The Gothic presbytery was added in the second half of the 14th century. During the extension in the 16th century, a sacristy and a northern porch were added; the Renaissance portal on the southern side dates from the same period.
The historic buildings include the stone so-called Pražský most from 1868 and several farmsteads from the 19th century, preserved as examples of folk architecture.
The Pomník selského povstání is a monumental sculpture made of Hořice sandstone commemorating the peasant uprising of 1680. It was created by the sculptor Otakar Velínský based on a design by Jan Štursa. The monument was unveiled on July 14, 1914; more than 15,000 people are said to have attended the ceremony.
The Mariánské sousoší na Rovince is a work from 1737 by the important East Bohemian Baroque sculptor Jiří František Pacák and is considered a significant example of High Baroque with elements of lyrical Rococo sentimentality.
Things to do
The Poznávací okruh po sochařských a stavebních památkách in Dolní Újezd and the surrounding area comprises 32 stops and is approximately 33 km long; 8 km of this consists of an inner circular route through the village. Each stop on the Dolní Újezd Heritage Circuit has a numbered sign and a QR code leading to descriptions of the monuments and directions to the next stop.
KČT cycling route 4019, named Krajem Smetany a Martinů, passes through Dolní Újezd.
Events
Újezdské babí léto, held annually in Dolní Újezd on the penultimate weekend of August, is a country-folk festival. It takes place in the open-air grounds of the Volunteer Fire Brigade in the Desná Valley next to the swimming pool; the grounds are used as a campsite for the festival. The traditional Benátská noc is held every year in early July in the open-air grounds in the Desná Valley in Dolní Újezd.
