Dolní Lukavice Chateau combines Baroque architectural history with the musical history of Joseph Haydn. The three-winged Baroque building was constructed by Jakub Auguston for Count Ferdinand Morzin; Joseph Haydn worked at the chateau from 1758 to 1760 and composed his first symphony there.
Culture and History
The park with a pheasantry at Dolní Lukavice Chateau is accessible. The village’s history also includes the Jewish cemetery, which was founded in 1654. No further burials have taken place there since 1923.
The single-nave Church of St Peter and Paul in Dolní Lukavice originally dates back to the Gothic period in the second half of the 13th century. It was remodelled in 1684 and again in 1734.
Nature and Landscape
A two-row bald cypress, approximately 170 years old, stands in the chateau park of Dolní Lukavice. The linden tree on Barborka is estimated to be around 200 years old and survived the storm of 1927, which uprooted the adjacent forest.
The “Guide to Route 8 of the ‘For the Beauties of Lukavicko’ Tourist Hike” focuses on the remarkable and significant trees of the Dolnolukavicko region.
Music and Events
The international Haydn music festival “Haydnovy hudební slavnosti” has been held since 1993 in memory of Joseph Haydn’s work as Kapellmeister of the chateau orchestra of Karl Josef Count Morzin at Dolní Lukavice Chateau from 1758 to 1760. The Haydnovy hudební slavnosti regularly take place in the second half of September. The programme features works by Haydn and his contemporaries, performed by local and international musicians.
