Mrákov: Hotels and accommodations

Mrákov combines the history of the Chodenland with architectural heritage, folklore, and landscape. The village showcases these facets in its sacred buildings, traditions passed down through generations, and cultural life.

Culture and history

The church dedicated to Saint Lawrence was built in Mrákov between 1811 and 1813 on the site of an earlier chapel in the village square. It is a three-aisled building with a prismatic tower on the façade. The protected complex includes the church, a mortuary, the surrounding wall with two gates and a wicket gate, a cast-iron cross, and the associated plots of land. The Chapel of Saint Wenceslas was also built in the center of the village in 1863.

Mrákov was one of the eleven oldest Choden villages in the southwestern border region of Bohemia. In the past, the Chods of Mrákov performed guard duty to protect the national border and the trade routes to Domažlice.

The Chodský soubor Mrákov preserves and develops the folkloric heritage of the Chodenland through singing and dancing Choden songs, as well as by preserving the traditional costumes of the lower Chodenland. The folklore association was founded in 1961 by a group of folklore enthusiasts.

A regular event is the annual Chodská hyjta festival: It takes place in Mrákov on the first Saturday after August 10 and features performances by participants from the Chodenland and abroad.

The homestead at Starý Klíčov No. 80 preserves a residential building constructed using log-building techniques, which was built no later than the first half of the 19th century and is documented as already existing in 1838. It is considered one of the best-preserved examples of the development of the log house in the Chodenland. Visits by Božena Němcová, Karel Havlíček, František Palacký, and F. L. Rieger are attributed to the memorial house in Mrákov’s village square.

Water and nature

Lomeček near Mrákov is a former quarry that serves as a natural outdoor swimming pool in summer and an ice-skating rink in winter. Lomeček’s underwater observation cabin lies at a depth of 8 meters and offers views of underwater life through several circular windows, each half a meter in diameter. With a guide, the cabin can be visited by a maximum of four people at a time.
