Culture and History

The town hall of Nýřany is a Neo-Renaissance building dating from 1885 with a painted ceiling. The single-nave pseudo-Gothic Church of St. Prokop was built in Nýřany between 1903 and 1904. It is dedicated to Saint Prokop, the patron saint of miners.

The Baroque chapel of Nýřany was rebuilt in the 18th century and dedicated to Saint Wenceslas after its restoration in 1991. Next to the chapel stands a stone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dating from 1862. The Church of “Plzen Barholomaeus Cathedral” is also located in the surroundings of Nýřany.

A monument in front of the town hall commemorates 13 miners who were shot during the strike in 1890. The miners’ colony of the former Humboldt mine has been preserved in Nýřany’s Humboldtka district. The Rodinné muzeum hraček displays, among other things, porcelain dolls and antique prams in its collection.

Nature and Surroundings

Dense forests stretch across the area surrounding Nýřany. Four streams are associated with Nýřany, including the Vejprnický stream.

The immediate surroundings of Nýřany include Šibeniční vrch Hill [Úherce u Nýřan], Dobrák Hill [Nýřany - Doubrava], and Jetelový vrch Hill [Chotěšov-Hoříkovice]. In the wider regional area lies Radyně Mountain.

Events and Leisure

The Běh města Nýřany is a traditional annual sporting event. The Easter hiking day “Stopou Janovského vodníka” has been held in Nýřany for many years.

The multipurpose sports field at the Koupaliště Nýřany outdoor swimming pool serves as a natural ice rink in winter.
