The Staroplzenecká educational trail runs from Starý Plzenec via Sedlec and back and is 10 km long. As a circular route, it leads to important historical, cultural, architectural and natural monuments in Starý Plzenec. It begins and ends at the square in Starý Plzenec by the Church of St. John the Baptist; the hike takes about three hours and passes through easy terrain with varied elevations.

Starý Plzenec is home to Andrejšky, a protected natural area with a ridge of bizarrely shaped silicate rocks. Černá stráň, a protected fossil site, is also located along the Staroplzenecká educational trail. In Sedlec, Starý rybník is a natural monument that is likewise situated along the educational trail.

Culture and History

On the acropolis of the Hůrka hillfort are the exposed foundations of the Church of St. Lawrence. The exposed foundations of the Church of the Holy Cross are located in the eastern outer bailey of the Hůrka hillfort.

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Starý Plzenec contains rare Gothic frescoes and is an immovable cultural monument.

The castle tower of Radyně houses a permanent interactive exhibition about everyday life in a medieval castle and the history of Radyně from its foundation to the present day. Climbing the 114 steps in the Radyně tower offers views of Plzeň and the surrounding area.

The Romanesque Rotunda of St. Peter and St. Paul is one of the oldest fully preserved sacred buildings of its kind in the Czech Republic. From Malostranské náměstí, it can only be reached on foot via a marked educational trail.

Food and Drink

BOHEMIA SEKT in Starý Plzenec offers tours of its sparkling-wine production and tastings of selected sparkling wines; freshly disgorged sparkling wine can also be tasted at the BOHEMIA SEKT manufactory.

BOHEMIA SEKT can be reached from Plzeň Main Station in 12 minutes; bus lines 50 and 51 also run there from Plzeň.
