History

The first written mention of Balkova Lhota dates back to 1523. The settlement probably originated as early as the 14th century under the name Včelákova Lhota. A small fortress in Balkova Lhota, mentioned in 1587, had an upper floor made of wood. There is a chapel in the village square.

The former fortress has not survived. The building in which the surrounding walls of the original fortress had been preserved was demolished and replaced by a new building. The former fortress was protected by two ponds and a moat.

Balkova Lhota railway station is located on line 201 from Tábor to Ražice, which continues to Strakonice. The station building, or passenger shelter, at Balkova Lhota station is accessible without barriers.

In the immediate vicinity of Balkova Lhota, Velký rybník features shoreline vegetation and surrounding meadows. The area around Balkova Lhota is used for agriculture.

Things to do

The “Na Borotín s K. H. Máchou” hiking trail begins at Balkova Lhota railway station and ends at Chotoviny railway station. In the wider regional area, the “Na Borotín s K. Máchou” hiking trail passes through Kostelec and Pikov and reaches the Starý zámek ruins.

A marked hiking route of the Čertovo břemeno Greenways system passes through the area around Balkova Lhota. Cycle route No. 1154 runs from Jistebnice to Tábor.
