The first written mention of Smržov dates back to 1367. At that time, Ješek z Kosovy Hory, the then owner of Lomnice, had the fields and meadows of the inhabitants of Smržov flooded in order to enlarge the Dvořiště pond.

Nature
The Koclířov pond near Smržov was created during the time of Štěpánek Netolický. The connection between the ponds via the Zlatá stoka was already used for this purpose. The Vydymač pond lies directly within the municipality of Smržov. In the extensive forests stretching almost as far as Hluboká nad Vltavou, the notable Žižkův dub oak tree can be found. According to tradition, the later Hussite military leader is said to have secretly met his companions there.

The larger Návesní kaple se zvoničkou chapel in Smržov is very well maintained and enclosed by a fence. The Výklenková kaplička sv. Jána chapel in Smržov is also very well maintained. In 1660, Jan Adolf Schwarzenberg had small chapels built in Smržov, as well as in other surrounding villages and in the fields. These were known as maradasky and commemorated the suffering of the local population.
The Rybářské závody fishing competitions in Smržov were held for the 26th time in 2023 and the 27th time in 2024. The Rožmberská rybniční soustava is an extremely valuable technical monument. It documents the outstanding development of early modern pond farming in South Bohemia, as well as the extensive economic activities of the prominent Rožmberk noble family. The system was created over the course of the 16th century as a network of interconnected ponds supplied by a system of artificial waterways.
Trails
The Naučná stezka Na Blata u Mazelova – trasa A educational trail follows the yellow trail markers to the Dvořiště pond and continues through Smržov to Lomnice nad Lužnicí. It is an easy 48 km circular route that takes 3.5 hours. The starting point of this route can be reached by car or train.
Baštýřův krmelec by the Dvořiště pond, just before the ascent onto the dam, is a suitable place to take a break during walks and cycling trips in the vicinity of Lomnice nad Lužnicí and Smržov.
