The Deanery Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is considered Vodňany’s most important landmark; written records about it date back to 1317.

Culture and history

The Vodňany City Museum is housed in the former synagogue, presents an exhibition on the history of the city, and also includes the exhibition “Fishing in the Vodňany Region”.

The Městská bašta in Vodňany houses the military history exhibition “Jan Žižka and Vodňany” and is accessible only with a guided tour. The Městská galerie Vodňany presents a permanent exhibition featuring items from the estates of Julius Zeyer, František Herites and Otakar Mokrý, as well as works by Czech artists from around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and drawings by Mikoláš Aleš. It also hosts temporary exhibitions.

Fishing trails

The 3 km-long Městský rybářský okruh is a circular route through Vodňany close to the city. It connects places directly associated with fishing, including the Velká Podvinice pond and the grounds of the Secondary Fisheries School. Along its route, it passes the Velká Outrata and Malá Outrata ponds as well as the Malá Podvinice pond before returning to the starting point. The circular route can be rounded off with a tasting of carp prepared in the Vodňany style.

Nature and interactive learning sites

The Stezka čápa Vodňany – Zátiší II is a 440 m-long footpath with 16 original interactive and informative elements that visitors can try out themselves. The forest park in Zátiší features wooden objects, giant mushrooms, the Stezka čápa Vodňana, and a place to relax or have a picnic.

The interactive educational and experiential trail Cesta úhoře near MEVPIS Vodňany uses game elements in a natural setting to explain the migration of the endangered eel; the trail is freely accessible.

Landscape and learning sites

Malý ústavní rybník is a protected natural area within a pond system, located 1.5 km northwest of Vodňany’s historic town square. Vodňanské Benátky is a picturesque section of a medieval millrace in Vodňany.

MEVPIS Vodňany is an educational and conference centre housed in the reconstructed Brokův mlýn and offers educational programmes for various target groups. The School Fisheries Museum in Vodňany includes aquariums with live fish and a historical section.
