Blížkovice: Church, Local History and Cycling Route

Blížkovice is a place whose history can be understood through tangible traces. Blížkovice has been documented as a market town since 1349. The parish church of St. Bartholomew contains a Romanesque core dating from the early 13th century. This gives you several perspectives to consider side by side: architectural history, local history, festival programme and a cycling connection through the landscape. These topics can be weighted differently when making your own plans, without any single focus needing to explain the place.

Church

The church interior includes a late Renaissance stone baptismal font with a lid bearing a wood carving of the Baptism of Christ from the late 18th century. Presumably, a Gothic presbytery with a sacristy and ossuary was added to the Church of St. Bartholomew in Blížkovice during the first quarter of the 14th century. Architectural elements and details of the furnishings open up different levels for historical observation: at times the architecture is in the foreground, while at others the craftsmanship takes centre stage.

Local History and Local Traces

On the market square, the Panská hospoda was the seat of eight guilds. Blížkovice had a brewery; apparently, hops were also grown in the field behind the church, which was called Chmelenec. Blížkovice had a comparatively extensive system of fishponds. Those who wish to read local history through more than just buildings can arrange these references side by side as different traces of crafts, cultivation and water management. The market square, field name and fishpond system provide different points of reference for the local history.

Festivals

The Blížkovické posvícení is regarded as a traditional festival with an extensive cultural and sports programme. The programme of the Blížkovické slavnosti included a theatrical performance of “ČOCHTAN VYPRAVUJE”, evening entertainment with THE FEET and brass music by MUZIKANTY Z JIŽNÍCH ČECH. The festival forms mentioned range from theatre and evening entertainment to brass music and can be considered independent cultural highlights.

Cycling Route

The 84-kilometre Živé pomezí Krumlovsko–Jevišovicko cycling route passes through Blížkovice. It largely avoids heavily trafficked roads and leads through hilly terrain, with sections offering views of the open landscape. Along the western edge of the South Moravian Region, the route connects the two Greenway corridors Praha–Wien (No. 48) and Krakow–Morava–Wien (No. 4). Route length, terrain, road selection and landscape views are different features that you can weigh against one another when planning your day. Cultural topics, event-related interests and outdoor activity do not have to be combined into a single itinerary.
