Drysice: Local History and Film Locations

The first written mention of Drysice dates from 1201. In that year, King Přemysl I donated the village to the Cathedral Church of St. Wenceslas in Olomouc.

A statue of Saint Florian was erected in Drysice village square in 1777. It commemorates major fires that severely damaged the village.

In 1750, the Bishop of Olomouc, Coloredo, had a coaching inn built in Drysice.

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is associated with two important dates: construction began at the end of 1887, and the church was consecrated on 25 October 1896. The church tower contains three bells dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, Saints Cyril and Methodius, and Saint Florian.

Local customs are also part of Drysice’s traditional heritage. The “Ostatky” tradition was revived with a masked procession through the village and an evening celebration. Wine tastings were also held annually in Drysice.

The economic history of Drysice includes a cooperative dairy founded there in 1925. It also supplied nearby communities, processed up to 2,000 litres of milk daily and produced excellent cheese.

The ruins of Melice Castle lie about 1 kilometre west of Drysice on a spur of land between Pustiměř and Drysice.

The rock walls of the Drysice quarry offer a special connection between landscape and film history. They appear in outdoor scenes from several Czech feature films, including “Za humny je drak” by Radim Cvrček from 1983 and “Strašidla z vikýře” by the same director from 1988. The two feature films mentioned are thus connected by their director, while their production years differ.

Scenes from the Slovak children’s television series “Spadla z oblakov”, directed by Radim Cvrček in 1978, were also filmed in the vicinity of the quarry.

General access to the Drysice quarry was prohibited; the access road was blocked by a barrier and marked with no-entry signs as well as notices indicating private property and a parking ban.
