Nature and Landscape

The “Balcarova skála–Vintoky” nature reserve protects a geomorphologically valuable karst area in Ostrov u Macochy, formed from Devonian limestone with cave systems. Underground watercourses are also part of the landscape: after flowing underground for some time and joining other sinking streams, the waters of the Lopač re-emerge at the Malý výtok Punkvy in the Pustý žleb valley.

Culture

The local history includes the late Baroque Church of St Mary Magdalene in Ostrov u Macochy, dating from 1785. Another attraction is a masonry windmill of the Dutch type, built from natural stone. It is located 600 metres northwest of the town centre, above a former limeworks.

Trails and Orientation

The Jantarová stezka trail passes by the information centre in Ostrov u Macochy. Regional Cycle Route B also runs through the area. The information centre primarily serves tourists and cyclists.

The “Okolo Ostrova u Macochy” route is an easy 2.6-kilometre walk that takes about an hour and a half. Local Cycle Route No. 5082 leads to the Macocha Gorge. The Ostrovská propast lies in the park in front of the vicarage; access is organised by SpeleoArt.
