Litoměřice-Město: Hotels and Accommodation

Litoměřice lies at the confluence of the Labe and Ohře rivers, at the transition between the mountains of České středohoří and the fertile Polabská Lowland. The town’s history and wine tradition can be experienced at a wide variety of sites.

History and Sacred Architecture

Since the 10th century, Dómský pahorek was home to an original ducal and Přemyslid hillfort complex covering approximately 6 hectares; it has disappeared without a trace. Around 1057, Duke Spytihněv II founded the Chapter of St. Stephen there. The present-day Cathedral of St. Stephen was built in the Early Baroque style between 1664 and 1668, after the previous church had been demolished between 1662 and 1664.

Museums and Memorial Sites

The Litoměřice Diocesan Museum is located on Mírové náměstí in a originally Gothic house bearing the year 1513 on its gable. Since 1995, it has presented works from the collections of the Diocese of Litoměřice. The Karel Hynek Mácha Memorial includes an exhibition in the room of the Na Vikárce house where the poet lived and died on 6 November 1836.

The Marionette Gallery is located in a Gothic tower that was formerly part of Litoměřice’s fortifications. It displays more than 250 marionettes and fairy-tale sets. Another historical perspective is offered by the exhibition “Důl Richard v proměnách času”. It is accessible in an approximately 160-metre-long underground passage beneath the town hall and documents the history of the nearby Bídnice hill. Information panels in Czech, German and English are located along the passage.

Wine and Crafts

Litoměřice Castle houses an exhibition providing an overview of the history of Czech viticulture. It also offers guided wine-tasting tours, which must be booked at least one or two days in advance. The Litoměřická Wine Trail is slightly more than 15 km long and includes nine stops with information panels. It officially begins in the courtyard of Litoměřice Castle. By prior telephone arrangement, visitors can visit local winegrowers along the wine trail and taste their wines.

The Dílna ručního papíru offers guided tours that begin every hour on the hour at 10, 11, 13, 14 and 15:00.

Cycling Route by the River

The Hněvice–Litoměřice section of the Elbe Cycle Route runs mostly along a cycle path and partly along quiet Class III roads.
