Třešť combines landscapes, local history, exhibitions, and traditional crafts passed down through generations. Its various facets can be seen at specific places – from the town’s oldest monument to a castle park and trails connected with the tradition of nativity-scene making.

Culture

The Church of St. Martin is the oldest monument in Třešť. The Třešť Synagogue has a vaulted hall with stucco decoration and a Neoclassical façade with an arcade. Its present appearance is also connected with a turning point in the town’s history: after a fire destroyed the former synagogue in 1825, a new Empire-style building was constructed.

The preserved rooms of the synagogue house three permanent exhibitions: “Franz Kafka a Třešť”, “Zaváté stopy”, and “Po stopách zmizelých sousedů”. The ground floor contains the “Zaváté stopy” exhibition on the history of the Jewish community in Třešť; the first floor houses an exhibition about the life of Franz Kafka.

Třešť also makes its own cultural contribution beyond the synagogue. The Třešť branch of the Muzeum Vysočiny Jihlava presents a permanent exhibition about J. A. Schumpeter. The first publicly accessible exhibition of the Muzeum Tesla was titled “Tesla, dědictví Č.S. elektroprůmyslu”. For groups, the Muzeum Tesla can arrange special guided tours by prior telephone appointment.

Nature

Třešť Castle Park is a naturalistic landscape park from the 18th century and surrounds the castle building on all sides. In addition to hotel guests, the castle park is also open to the public; public access is time-limited.

Traditions

The Stations of the Cross in Třešť have 14 stations and lead from the Church of St. Martin to Šibeniční vrch. Another connection between a path and local customs is the Betlémská cesta: it brings to life the more than 200-year-old tradition of nativity-scene making maintained by families in Třešť and can be walked annually from 26 December to 2 February. Since 2015, the Betlémská cesta has been listed in the Czech List of Intangible Elements of Traditional Folk Culture.

The nativity-scene-making tradition also includes the traditional July event Dřevořezání. During the event, woodcarvers from all over the Czech Republic make new figures for a shared nativity scene.
