Gustav Mahler was born on July 7, 1860, in House No. 9 in Kaliště, the Gustav Mahler Birth House. The birthplace has a music hall where concerts are held.

Trails and Landscape

The Gustav Mahler Trail runs from Kaliště u Humpolce via Speřice, across the D1 motorway, Lhotice, Lískovice and Vřesník to Želiv. It is a hiking trail marked with green tourist signs.

Two tourist-marked hiking trails run through the administrative area of Kaliště. One tourist-marked hiking trail leads from Proseč via Kaliště to Speřice. Cycle Route 1211 leads from Proseč via Kaliště and Holušice towards Speřice and continues onward. The “In the Footsteps of Gothic” cycling tour runs mainly along roads as well as forest and field paths.

Kaliště is located in the Křemešnická vrchovina, which forms part of the Českomoravská vrchovina, in a hilly landscape shaped by forestry and agriculture.

Culture and Monuments

The Church of St. John the Baptist stands on the eastern edge of the village green in Kaliště. It dates from 1812 and is an example of late rural Baroque. It has been a protected cultural monument since 1958.

The Gothic granite Křížový kámen near Staré Hutě bears reliefs of a cross, a spear, a sword and a battle-axe. The Křížový kámen lies about 40 meters from a red-marked trail west of the settlement of Staré Hutě, which belongs to Kaliště, and is freely accessible.

Nature

Rybník Pařez comprises aquatic and wetland ecosystems with numerous specially protected species.
