Karolín: History, Chřiby and Local Traditions

In Karolín, evidence of human presence dates back to the end of the Middle Paleolithic and the Upper Paleolithic. A Middle Paleolithic almond-shaped hand axe made of reddish-brown radiolarite was found in the vicinity of Karolín.

History

Further archaeological finds provide evidence of Slavic settlement in the Karolín area by the bearers of the Urnfield culture in the 7th to 9th centuries. Karolín was founded as a settlement in 1822. The settlement was named Karolínov (Karolinendorf) after its founder. The local history thus connects very early traces of human presence with a much later settlement foundation. The traditional name also refers to the founder and preserves a local designation for the place.

Culture and Local Traditions

Karolín has a chapel dedicated to Saint Florian and the Virgin Mary, which was built before the end of the 19th century. The local chapel was completely renovated in 2022 using funds from the municipal budget. Other local sights in Karolín include two stone crosses.

A traditional specialty is also part of the local annual cycle: Karolín hosts the traditional slivovitz competition, or slivovitz tasting, “Karolín košt.” According to local tradition, cherries from Karolín were transported by train to the market in Vienna. The two names for the event describe the same local custom from different perspectives: the competition emphasizes comparison, while the tasting emphasizes jointly evaluating the drink. The Czech name “Karolín košt” is retained as the local designation.

The southern part of the cadastral area of Karolín borders the Chřiby Nature Park. The Panenský potok stream flows through the cadastral area of Karolín. The surroundings of Karolín are suitable for walking.

For further exploration of the landscape, there is the Stezka severními Chřiby trail. This is an intermunicipal project to develop a network of local tourist routes. From the relevant section of the Stezka severními Chřiby, the White Carpathians, the Zlín Region and the surrounding area can be seen.
