Discover culture, nature, and hotels in Koryčany

Koryčany combines architectural history, sacred art, Jewish heritage, and landscapes with a clearly described hiking route in the surrounding area. The town and its immediate surroundings feature a wide variety of sites, ranging from a villa designed by the Viennese firm Fellner & Helmer to a nature reserve and a sandstone rock with a view.

Culture

The Thonet Villa in Koryčany was built in 1896 to a design by the Viennese firm Fellner & Helmer. In March 2023, the Czech Ministry of Culture declared the villa a cultural monument. Koryčany Chateau is also part of the town’s historic architecture: it is a Baroque chateau built after 1677. The chateau is not open to the public, but its well-maintained garden can be visited year-round. The park of Koryčany Chateau covers 2.8 hectares.

The parish church in Koryčany, dedicated to Saint Lawrence, was first mentioned in 1350. The Church of Saint Lawrence contains a life-size Gothic wooden statue of the Virgin Mary dating from around the end of the 14th century. Another historic site is the Jewish cemetery in Koryčany. It contains more than 200 gravestones; the oldest surviving gravestone dates from 1674. In the 1990s, the cemetery was designated a state-protected cultural monument.

Annual events

The traditional Koryčanská pouť pilgrimage festival takes place on the first weekend of September. In the vicinity of Koryčany, a traditional pilgrimage to Hora svatého Klimenta takes place every year during the Pentecost holidays.

Nature

Swimming is prohibited in the Koryčanská reservoir near Koryčany because the entire reservoir lies within drinking-water protection zone 1. The Moravanské lúky area is also located near Koryčany. It is a complex of forest meadows and small forest clearings covering a total area of 8.72 hectares. The area was designated a nature reserve on October 28, 1990.

Hiking

The “Crossing the Chřiby Mountains from Koryčany to Osvětimany” hiking route begins at the car service center in Koryčany and ends in Osvětimany. Including a visit to Cimburk Castle, it is 14 kilometers long and takes five hours. For this hike, travel from Kroměříž to Koryčany is by bus operated by the Integrated Transport System of the Zlín Region (IDZK).

Along the hiking route, steps carved into the rock lead to the Kazatelna rock. Near Koryčany, Kazatelna is a sandstone rock protruding from the slope, with steps carved into the rock and a view across the Kyjovka Valley toward the opposite ridge of the Chřibské hřbety, Cimburk Castle, and part of the Koryčanská reservoir.
