Martinice: Reconciliation Cross, History and Hotels in Czechia

In Martinice, at the edge of the village along the road in the locality of “U dvou křížů”, stands the old stone reconciliation cross “Smírčí kříž”. It dates from the first half of the 17th century and has been protected as a cultural monument since 3 May 1958. The outline of a sword is clearly visible on the stone surface; the sword symbol is carved into it.

Culture

The old bell tower of Martinice is part of the village landscape and is a landmark of the village square. It is dedicated to Saint Florian, the patron saint of the municipality. Thus, alongside the reconciliation cross, there is another clearly identified point in the village whose designation and religious affiliation have been handed down.

History

In the built-up area of Martinice, near the primary school building and road II/490, stands a monument to the victims of the First World War. The granite obelisk stands on a tiered pedestal and is decorated with a relief. The war memorial commemorates twelve young men from Martinice who did not return from the First World War.

There is also a memorial plaque to Jan Bezděk on primary school building No. 70 in the built-up area of Martinice, near road II/490. It commemorates Jan Bezděk, who was born in Martinice and executed in Frankfurt am Main on 18 March 1944 because of his activities in the resistance.

Activities

A newly built cycle path leads from Martinice to Holešov and to Holešov’s industrial zone. Martinice also has a sports complex with a football pitch, multi-purpose area, tennis court, gymnasium and changing rooms.
