Horní Lhota: Culture, Castle Ruins and Routes

The Parish Church of St. Dionysius is a registered cultural monument in Horní Lhota. Other local features include landscapes, bodies of water, castles and routes.

Culture

The surviving core of the Parish Church of St. Dionysius was built in 1700 on the site of what was presumably an older wooden church. The present interior is decorated with an altarpiece by J. Úprka. A historical landmark has also been preserved in the centre of Horní Lhota: a water mill is located there.

History

Immediately north of and above Horní Lhota, the ruins of Sehrad Castle (Engelsberk) lie on the Vala spur. Small foundation remains as well as massive ramparts with ditches have survived from this complex. The castle of Sehradice, originally called Engelsberk, should be considered separately. It came into being sometime after the middle of the 13th century as an administrative centre of episcopal property. Annual Fašank processions are also part of the local tradition. The two castles should not be equated: at Sehrad, the surviving traces in the terrain are the main focus, whereas at Sehradice, the original name, the dating and the former administrative function are central. Their location, state of preservation and historical role therefore remain clearly distinguishable.

Nature and Routes

Part of Horní Lhota lies within the Bílé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area. The Olše stream flows through the village; its right-bank tributary is the Komoncový stream. The blue-marked hiking trail and Cycle Route 5056 run through the cadastral area of Horní Lhota. Another cycle route from Luhačovice to Vizovice leads via Dolní Lhota and Horní Lhota. The “Báje a pověsti pod Starým Světlovem” educational trail leads from Pozlovice in the direction of Horní Lhota. The routes are mentioned with different spatial references. The blue-marked hiking trail and Cycle Route 5056 belong to the description of the cadastral area of Horní Lhota. By contrast, the connection from Luhačovice to Vizovice runs via Dolní Lhota and Horní Lhota, while the educational trail runs from Pozlovice in the direction of Horní Lhota. This keeps the information about the local area, route alignment and starting point distinct from one another. The nearest railway station is in Luhačovice.
