Otrokovice: Baťa Architecture, Nature and Hotels

Otrokovice is a place where designed urban history, protected nature and routes through the city exist side by side. The places and buildings mentioned include Baťa buildings in the Baťov district, the Na letišti Nature Monument in the cadastral area of Otrokovice and the Baťa Canal.

Culture

The Obchodní dům Otrokovice building is a Baťa building from the 1930s in the Baťov district. It was designed by architect Vladimír Karfík. The building is also called Prior and represents Czech functionalist architecture. The Společenský dům is also associated with Karfík: it was built according to a design by this architect and has been a listed monument since 2014. The three-winged building from 1936 is an urban-planning and architectural landmark of the Baťov district.

The built environment in Baťov also includes several Baťa houses, which have been preserved there to this day mainly in their original condition, without extensions or thermal insulation. The central park was located in front of the Společenský dům. The green area of more than 2.5 hectares separated the factory area from the social and residential areas and formed the recreational and functional centre of the garden city, where Baťa employees spent their free time. The sacred building was constructed according to a design by Mojmír Korvas, consecrated in 1995 and is considered a defining building of náměstí 3. května and the city of Otrokovice.

Nature

The Na letišti Nature Monument is located in the cadastral area of Otrokovice. It protects a dead arm of the Morava River with aquatic flora and fauna. Rare species found in the nature monument include floating water caltrop, smooth newt, European fire-bellied toad, common toad, European green toad and common water frog. Grey herons and kingfishers also occur there.

Routes and Water

The Naučná stezka Baťov educational trail is a 4.4 km-long circular route with twelve stops where the history of Otrokovice is presented. It runs along paved paths through the city and can be used for walking, Nordic walking, running or cycling.

The Stezky Branou do Chřibů routes begin at the Baťa Canal landing stage in Otrokovice. They comprise 22 km of marked circular routes that are also suitable for mountain bikes. The Baťa Canal is navigable for recreational boating over a length of 53 km from Otrokovice to Rohatec.

Getting There

Otrokovice railway station is a major terminal of the Zlínský kraj region and is located on line 330 of the II railway corridor (Břeclav–Přerov). The regional single-track line 331 from Zlín or Vizovice also terminates there.
