In Alaverdi, there is a 19th-century church that belongs to the hall church type. A 19th-century hall church is located in the village cemetery of Alaverdi.

The building is constructed of yellowish-white limestone and stands on a 50-centimetre-high base. Its floor plan is rectangular; there are three entrances on the south, west, and north sides. At the top, the church walls are finished with a moulded cornice made of hewn stone.

Inside, the corners near the eastern apse are rounded. Pilasters flank the southern and northern entrances; worked Shirimi stones have been inserted in some corners. The church monument was restored in 1984.

Landscape

Alaverdi is located in the southern foothills of Imereti on the left bank of the Turunis River. The Turunis is a left-bank tributary of the Borimeli.

History

Near Alaverdi, the 8th-century Mtsqeris Tsikhe fortress has been preserved. The cultural heritage sites of the Zestaponi municipality include the ancient fortified city of Shorapani and the Tabakini St. George Monastery. The monastery is notable for its architecture and 16th-century wall paintings.

Small churches from the Middle Ages and the 19th century have been documented in the villages of the Zestaponi municipality, including Alaverdi.
