Landscape and Setting

The visitor attractions of Terjola Municipality include forests, waterfalls, and karst caves. Terjola is located in the lowlands of Imereti in western Georgia, on the right bank of the Chkhara River. The city lies on the Tbilisi–Zestaponi highway; the Terjola–Tkibuli and Kutaisi–Vartsikhe roads of state importance also pass through Terjola. Terjola was granted city status in 1983. Terjola Municipality has Colchic-type vegetation. Its forests contain oaks, beeches, lindens, Caucasian zelkovas, box trees, willows, and mulberry trees. The municipality also has three theaters, museums, libraries, and other cultural institutions.

Culture and History

In the surrounding area is Dedagvtisa in Gvankiti, a historical monument dating from the 12th century. In the area, visitors can see the David and Sergo Kldiashvili Museum and the Shalva and Petre Amiranashvili Museum in Terjola Municipality. The municipality also contains Stone Age caves, medieval fortresses, and churches. Terjola is first mentioned in records in the 17th century.

The St. George Church in Gogni is nearby. It has no door and welcomes believers at any time; pilgrims visit it on May 6 and November 23. The David Kldiashvili House Museum is also nearby. It contains the writer's manuscripts as well as photographic and documentary materials, furniture, dishes, clothing, and his deathbed.

Nature and Caves

The Navenakhevi Cave is located in Imereti. It is a karst cave with four chambers on two levels, limestone stalactites and stalagmites, and a seven-meter-high stalagmite at the exit. Visitors can combine a visit to the cave with nearby educational facilities, cafés, and forest trails. The nearby cave has a parking lot, a visitor center, a cafeteria, and an amphitheater; there are also attractions for children. An asphalt road can be driven by car to the Navenakhevi Cave.

Kadagidze Rafi is located near Sazano, a four-meter-high waterfall in the Dzusa Gorge. Seven dinosaur footprints have been preserved near the waterfall. At low summer water levels, a 25-meter-long cave entrance may become visible there.

The Mujireti Cave is nearby and can be reached via a village road accessible by car, followed by a 200-meter path. It has a main passage and short side passages in an upper limestone layer. Visiting the nearby Dzevri Cave requires a certified guide and special equipment. An excursion to the nearby Sakazhia Cave requires a permit from the Administration of the Imereti Caves Protected Areas.

Wine and Cuisine

In Terjola, Makaridze Winery continues a family winemaking tradition and has planted Otskhanuri Sapere vines. Qvevris are used in the Makaridze Winery family wine cellar. The winery offers wine sales and tastings in Terjola; booking is required for a tasting.

In Imereti, Terjola is one of the cities associated with young chicken in Isrim-Makvali sauce.
