Culture
The Gelati Monastery was begun in 1106 near Kutaisi on a wooded hill above the Tskaltsitela River; its main church was completed in 1130. The Bagrati Cathedral was built in the 11th century by King Bagrat III as a symbol of the unification of Georgia. It stands on Mount Ukimerioni; almost all of Kutaisi can be seen from there, and a visit to the cathedral also offers this view.
The Lado Meskhishvili State Drama Theatre was built in the 1950s and was granted the status of a cultural monument in 2009. The Kutaisi Historical-Archaeological Museum-Reserve has existed since 1981 and comprises more than 805 significant monuments. The building housing the museum is described as a cultural monument and as the Dimitri Nazarishvili Memorial House Museum.
