Culture

Asureti was founded in 1818 as the German settlement of Elisabethal. Residential and agricultural buildings, the unique wine cellar, a Lutheran church, and houses in an older German architectural style have been preserved in Asureti from the German colonial period. The unique wine cellar in Asureti was granted cultural heritage status in 2017; the Lutheran church was built in the Gothic style in 1871. White stone-and-clay houses, built without nails, can also still be found today. Anyone wishing to book a hotel in Asureti can continue their accommodation search afterwards.

A sulfur bath is one of the preserved material monuments of the German settlement. The German settlers developed agriculture and livestock farming in Asureti. The historical heritage also includes a German cemetery: the gravestones bear the engraved surnames of settlers and their descendants who came from various parts of Germany.

Landscape

Asureti lies on the banks of the Asuretiskhevi River. Vineyards were established nearby on the banks of the Algeti.

Wine

Asuretuli Shala is a dry red wine with a light or dark ruby color. The Asuretuli Shala microzone is located in Asureti; grape processing and wine production take place exclusively within this microzone. Bottling of Asuretuli Shala is permitted in Georgia.

Historically, the Shala wine produced by the German settlers was sold in Yerevan, Baku, and throughout Georgia. A three-story German-style cellar was built in 1931 in a vineyard near Asureti for the production and bottling of wine. Asuretuli Shala was granted protected designation of origin status at a ceremony on November 24, 2022.

Asuretuli Shala is made from Asuretuli-Shavi grapes grown in the microzone. In addition, up to 15 percent combined of Tavkveri and Shavkapito may be used. Asuretuli Shala is described as a rare grape variety and is associated with the German farmer Otto Schall.
