Dmanisi: Hotels and Accommodations

Dmanisi is located on the volcanic Dmanisi Plateau on both banks of the Mashavera River. The skulls of a man and a woman who lived 1.8 million years ago were discovered in Dmanisi. The skulls are on display at the Georgian National Museum.

Nature

The Dmanisi Plateau features gorges 70 to 80 meters deep. The Mashavera Gorge is the most important gorge of the Dmanisi Plateau.

Archaeology and History

The Dmanisi archaeological site preserves a 322-meter-long fortification wall with towers, residential and agricultural buildings, a palace, and a bathhouse. An open-air museum has also been established at the archaeological site. Traces of ancient humans were discovered there, including those of Zezva and Mzia. The site also contains a 200-meter-long secret tunnel.

The Dmanisi archaeological site has yielded more hominid remains in a single layer than any other site in the world. Near Dmanisi, the Dmanisi Museum-Reserve preserves a multilayered archaeological landscape. It includes a medieval town with a church, a fortification wall, domestic buildings, and residential areas, as well as layers from the Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age.

Dmanisi Sioni is a three-church basilica from the 6th century with an elaborately decorated western gate added in the first quarter of the 13th century. More than 190 historical and architectural monuments, mostly from the Middle Ages, are located around Dmanisi.

Culture

Dmanisi has the Zinaida Kverenchkhiladze State Drama Theatre. The Dmanisi Culture and Arts Center has an archaeological exhibition hall displaying finds from the Dmanisi municipality.
