Glodeni District: Nature and Cultural Experiences along the Prut
Glodeni District combines impressive river landscapes, protected habitats and cultural sites. The most defining features are the Pădurea Domnească Nature Reserve, the wetlands along the Prut and the natural monuments around Cobani.
The Pădurea Domnească Nature Reserve stretches for 40 km along the Prut across the districts of Glodeni and Fălești. The nature reserve is home to 47 mammal species, 15 reptile and amphibian species, and 159 bird species. The region therefore clearly focuses on nature observation and river landscape experiences.
One of the particularly distinctive habitats is Țara Bâtlanilor. The forest wetland lies within the oak forest in the Prut floodplain. The surrounding area also includes bodies of water, former river channels and rock formations.
What kind of nature characterizes the region along the Prut?
Țara Bâtlanilor is primarily characterized by its birdlife. Three species of waterbirds nest there in trees: the grey heron (Ardea Cinerea), the little egret (Egretta garzeta) and the black-crowned night heron (Hycticorex nycticarax).
The scale of individual bodies of water also illustrates the region's natural features. The relic lake La Fontal covers 24.2 hectares and is the largest body of water in the entire Pădurea Domnească Nature Reserve. The former Prut river channel Potcoava covers 9.1 hectares, is 1.9 metres deep on average and reaches 3.8 metres at its deepest points. It separated from the Prut 30 years ago.
The natural monuments add distinctly pronounced rocky landscapes to this picture. Stânca Mare lies south of Cobani and is more than 1,000 metres long, 100 metres wide and 40 metres high. The Uriașul reef in Cheile Butești is more than 2,000 metres long, 125 metres wide and 40 metres high.
What should you consider when observing wildlife?
The Țara Bâtlanilor colony comprises around 1,000 breeding pairs. A total of 332 nests were counted, of which 271 were occupied. The birds stay there from the end of March until the first third of October.
Access to the colony is heavily restricted during the breeding season because of the strict protection measures, so that the birds are not disturbed. The colony is therefore not a freely accessible excursion destination with guaranteed viewing.
Which rocks and bodies of water can you identify?
Stânca Mare is located south of Cobani. The Uriașul reef lies in Cheile Butești.
The bodies of water also differ significantly. La Fontal is a relic lake and, at 24.2 hectares, the largest body of water in the entire protected area. Potcoava, by contrast, is a former Prut river channel covering 9.1 hectares. Its average depth is 1.9 metres, while it reaches 3.8 metres at its deepest points. The river channel separated from the Prut 30 years ago.
Which cultural sites should be included in your travel plans?
The village of Cobani is home to a wooden church protected as cultural heritage and reflecting the cultural identity of the region.
The wider regional surroundings of Glodeni also include Biserica Berza Church and Biserica Româneşti Church. The La Parapet summit is likewise located in the wider regional surroundings of Glodeni.
The Festival of Ethnicities “Unitate prin diversitate” was held in Glodeni on 15 September 2023 on the occasion of the town day.
What accommodation and route information is important?

The natural monuments “Suta de Movile”, “Stânca Mare” and “Cheile Butești” are nearby. The guesthouse offers 12 sleeping places in two cottages.
