Soroca District: Culture, Dniester Landscapes and Nature Experiences

Soroca District combines sites of cultural and historical significance with river landscapes, museums, nature observation and religious traditions. Which historic places give the journey its character?

The Soroca Fortress represents the medieval and early modern history of the region. Stephen the Great initially had it built from wood in the 15th century. In the 16th century, Petru Rareș rebuilt it in stone. The fortress has a completely circular ground plan and five defensive towers.

Another cultural and historical landmark is The Candle of Gratitude. The structure was built from Cosăuți stone, is almost 30 metres high and contains a small chapel. It stands on a high hill overlooking the Dniester and is shaped like a gigantic candle.

The historical connection of Cosăuți is also shaped by its landscape. The historic Cosăuți Skete was located 1.5 km from the source of the Iorginți stream. Iorginți is a right-bank tributary of the Dniester. The skete was situated in a gorge bounded by hills on three sides and by the Dniester to the north.
