History

The Clock Tower is a symbol of Herceg Novi and was built in 1667 under Ottoman rule as the city’s main gate. Forte Mare marks the beginning of the medieval town founded by Tvrtko I Kotromanić in 1382.

Forte Mare overlooks the entrance to the Bay of Kotor, the city harbor, Igalo, and the Old Town. The fortress also hosts open-air film screenings and cultural and artistic events.

Kanli Kula was built in the 16th century and also served as a prison. The complex serves as a summer stage with space for more than 1,500 spectators.

The Španjola Fortress was built in 1538 during the Spanish occupation of Herceg Novi. It stands on Bajer Hill at approximately 170 meters above sea level and overlooks the entrance to the Bay of Kotor.

Culture

The Mirko Komnenović City Museum has been open to the public since October 28, 1953. It contains archaeological, historical, artistic, and ethnological collections. The museum also includes a botanical garden with plants brought from around the world by local sailors.

The Savina Monastery consists of two churches dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God, a monastic residence with a treasury, and the Church of Saint Sava. The Great Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God in Savina was built from 1777 to 1799 and combines Byzantine, Romano-Greek, and Baroque styles.

The Njegoš School was opened to the public in 2018 after its restoration. Its exhibition is dedicated to the history of the school and the period when Njegoš studied in Topla.

The Ivo Andrić Nobel House is the only house built by the writer during his lifetime; he lived there from 1963 to 1968. The house presents photographs from Andrić’s life in Herceg Novi, as well as from his work as a writer, Nobel laureate, and diplomat. The permanent exhibition includes replicas of his Nobel diploma and Nobel medal.

Routes

The Šetalište pet Danica promenade is fully paved along its entire route from Igalo to Meljine. A 1.7-kilometer section of the promenade between Hotel Plaža and Meljine was reconstructed with paving, lighting, street furniture, and landscaping.

Nature

In the Herceg Novi area, Orjen offers mountain biking on historic Austro-Hungarian roads and modern gravel paths, as well as birdwatching, trail running, paragliding, mountaineering, and caving. There is also an adventure park in Vrbanj.

Orjen Nature Park is a protected mountain area within the municipality of Herceg Novi. Its marked trails range from easy walks to challenging mountain routes; the trail to Veliki Kabao reaches the highest point of Orjen at 1,894 meters.
