Šavnik

The Durmitor mountain range is part of the Šavnik area. There are more than 20 mountain and hiking trails. The 2,994-hectare Dragišnica and Komarnica Nature Park lies in the far northwest of the Municipality of Šavnik. Šavnik provides access to the most beautiful parts of Durmitor and to Nevidio Canyon.

Dragišnica and Komarnica Nature Park brings together mountain scenery, canyon valleys and gorges. The Dragišnica forest complex lies within the park, on the southern slopes of Durmitor. It is considered a destination for nature lovers, visitors seeking leisurely walks and photographers. Two Pošćenska Lakes are also among the landscape features of the Municipality of Šavnik.

Nature lovers, hikers, anglers and photographers will find another natural attraction along the Komarnica River. The river is rich in brown trout and grayling. Those interested in rivers can include this feature alongside the forest and mountain scenery when choosing their excursions.

The trails in the nature park vary considerably: they range from easily accessible walking paths to mountain ascents at elevations of nearly 2,000 meters. The trails connect villages, plateaus, canyon rims and high mountain peaks. Šavnik therefore offers both short nature outings and tours into higher-altitude landscapes; choose specific trails based on your hiking plans.

The marked mountain trail to Boljske Grede is a particular challenge. It is considered demanding and technically difficult, and is suitable only for visitors in good physical condition. Boljske Grede is also a destination for hikers and climbers. The cliffs offer panoramic views of the deep Komarnica Canyon, the surrounding mountain peaks and dense forests.

Nevidio Canyon is a destination for adventure tourism. Its features include narrow passages, high rock walls, clear water and natural pools. Its history also makes it noteworthy for travelers interested in culture: the canyon was first traversed in its entirety in 1965, after long being considered unknown and impassable to humans.

Grabovica Canyon is about one kilometer long. Its varied route includes waterfalls and natural pools. Skakavica offers a different natural experience: the seasonal waterfall is about 80 meters high and becomes active during snowmelt and heavy rain. The path there leads through a natural landscape and is suitable for leisurely walks and photography.

Near Pošćenje is an important necropolis of stećci, medieval tombstones. Tušina is also one of the subregions of Šavnik. Two monasteries are of particular interest to visitors interested in culture: Podmalinsko Monastery was built around 1252 on the right bank of the Bukovica River and is one of the most important examples of sacred architecture in the Municipality of Šavnik. The Monastery of St. George in Bijela was built in the 11th century in the village of Bijela, on the river of the same name.

One example of local cuisine is Gnijezdo restaurant in the village of Petnjica. It serves Montenegrin home-style specialties, grilled dishes and international cuisine. Alongside nature and culture, visitors exploring Šavnik can therefore also consider a range of culinary options.

With mountain roads, forest tracks and plateaus between canyons and mountain ranges, Dragišnica and Komarnica Nature Park offers good conditions for recreational cycling and mountain biking. There are also technically demanding cycling sections near Komarnica Canyon and at higher elevations.
