Łagów – Lakes, Castle and Trails

The Knights Hospitaller Castle is in the centre of Łagów, on the strip of land between two lakes. Lake Ciecz, also known as Lake Trześniowskie, and Lake Łagowskie are connected there by a shallow canal. You can enjoy views of Lake Łagowskie from a boat, kayak or pedal boat. Trail options range from about 1.5 kilometres to longer routes of 22 kilometres.

The Knights Hospitaller Castle and the March Gate give Łagów a distinctive historical character. The March Gate is a valuable medieval element of the town’s fortifications. It was built in the 16th century on the site of a presumed wooden predecessor dating from the 14th century. Another striking feature is the 35-metre-high tower of the Knights Hospitaller Castle, which offers panoramic views of Łagów.

The Church of St John the Baptist is another specific cultural stop: this stone-and-brick building is neoclassical and dates from 1725; it was remodelled in 1877. If you are interested in events, Łagów hosts the Lubuskie Film Summer, held every year since 1969. The Jarmark Smakosza is also held regularly.

Another notable structure is the railway viaduct on Mostowa Street. Built in 1906, it is 40 metres long and about 25 metres high. Stairs lead up to it, and from the top there are panoramic views of Łagów. The viewpoints thus differ in their architectural settings: the tower is part of the Knights Hospitaller Castle, while the viaduct belongs to railway architecture.

For a shorter route, consider the Sokola Góra nature and cultural history trail: it is about 1.5 kilometres long, takes around 40 minutes and lies right beside the lower castle grounds of Łagów. The easy Lake Łagowskie scenic route, at about 9 kilometres and around two and a half hours, is a longer option. The stated distances and times help you choose between these two routes based on the time and distance you have in mind.

Other trails continue from the lower castle grounds into the surrounding area. The Pawski Ług nature trail runs for 12 kilometres to a peat bog reserve and back along the western shore of Lake Łagowskie. The Jezioro Czarne nature and cultural history trail is about 12 kilometres long and takes around three hours. The Skansen Jemiołów trail has a different destination: the 13-kilometre route leads to the open-air agricultural museum in Jemiołów.

The Bracikowo nature and scenic route runs from Łagów through Jemiołów and Bracikowo and back to Łagów, covering 18 kilometres. The Buczyna route is 22 kilometres long and runs from Łagów through Sieniawa, Buczyna, Bucze and Żelechów and back to Łagów. Both routes start and end in Łagów, but differ in length and the places along the way. In the wider region, the Łagowskie Stowarzyszenie Turystyki Rowerowej i Pieszej (Łagów Cycling and Walking Tourism Association) has marked four cycling routes and six walking trails through the landscape of the Łagowsko-Sulęciński Park. These routes vary in length and difficulty.
