Bucium: Basalt Columns, Protected Areas and Culture

Detunata Goală in Bucium is a geological nature reserve covering an area of 24 ha. It consists of vertical prismatic basalt columns and basalt scree deposits at the base and reaches an altitude of 1,158 m.

Nature

Detunata Flocoasă is a nature reserve at an altitude of 1,265 m, with forest-covered rocks. It provides protected habitat for numerous species of montane flora. The Negrileasa Daffodil Meadow lies in the southeast of Bucium commune and is a botanical nature reserve known for its daffodils, which bloom in May. Hiking

Access to Detunata Goală follows an unpaved road to a junction with a memorial cross. The car can be parked there; this is followed by an approximately ten-minute walk to the foot of Detunata. The final forest ascent from the base of Detunata Goală includes difficult sections; suitable footwear and appropriate equipment are required. Hiking trail 30MN05 is marked with a red cross. The ascent along this trail leads from the cemetery in Bucium for more than 1 km to the Popasul Fefeleaga rest area. A local tradition calls for an excursion to Detunata on the first Sunday in July, followed by a church service at a cross commemorating the revolutionaries of 1848.

Culture

The Bucium–Vulcoi-Corabia Roman settlement is an archaeological site from the Roman period of the 2nd to 3rd centuries AD. The Bucium-Șasa ethnographic exhibition presents the characteristics of the local population in two rooms. Bucium was an important center of furrier's craft, producing elaborately decorated fur coats and waistcoats, as well as carpentry and the making of traditional costumes. From 1906 to 1910, the Bucium-Șasa parish house was the home and workplace of the writer Ion Agârbiceanu, who served there as a Greek Catholic priest.

The Church of “Duminica Tuturor Sfinților” in Bucium was built in 1821 and is a historic monument. It combines traditional architectural elements with influences typical of the period and has a slender tower. Inside are old icons and finely ornamented details.
