Culture and History

The Galerie de Artă „Rudolf Schweitzer – Cumpăna“ is located in a building constructed in 1886 in an eclectic style influenced by Classicism. The Memorial Închisoarea Pitești addresses the Pitești phenomenon, a form of ongoing physical and psychological torture inflicted on anti-communist students between 1949 and 1951. The memorial is located in the centre of Piteşti and has a car park suitable for coaches; one-hour guided tours are also offered in Romanian or English. The Biserica Domnească „Sfântul Gheorghe“ is open daily from 07:00 to 20:00.

The Muzeul Județean Argeș is located in the former prefecture building, constructed between 1889 and 1899. The main building houses the history and natural sciences departments as well as the planetarium. The same museum also contains the Muzeul Sportului Argeșean, which has been open to the public since 2008. Studioul 125, also known as Sala „Liviu Ciulei“, was inaugurated in 1975 as a studio theatre for experimental performances. The Reuniunea Studiourilor Teatrale, held four times between 1980 and 1983, was revived in 2001 as the Festivalul Național al Teatrului de Studio and later became an international festival. Teatrul „Alexandru Davila“ is located in the centre of Piteşti and comprises the drama, revue, and children’s and youth departments.

The Fundația Culturală Ilfoveanu offers courses in photography, decorative art, and visual art for children, young people, and adults, as well as workshops in crafts, media, and communication. Its temporary exhibition galleries are dedicated to contemporary art, including painting, sculpture, photography, video, installations, and experimental projects. In addition, the foundation presents a permanent exhibition featuring works by Sorin Ilfoveanu. The Planetarium Pitești in the Muzeul Județean Argeș uses a 4K UHD laser projection system.

Parks and Nature

Lunca Argeșului Park is a 24-hectare park on the lower terrace of the Argeș River and has 4 kilometres of cycle paths. The Simfonia Lalelelor festival, held annually in April, has taken place in this park since 2022. Trivale Park was created from 1900 onwards in a centuries-old oak forest under the direction of landscape architect Edouard Redont. The Pădurea Trivale forest reserve is characterised by rare thermophilous oaks and diverse vegetation.

In 2023, Pitești Zoo covered 12 hectares and included more than 60 species, with a total of 1,800 animals. Parcul Ștrand has an operating schedule for its miniature train, as well as boat and pedal boat hire.
