Brașov: Discover Culture, Nature and History

The Black Church is considered a landmark of the city of Brașov. It houses a famous collection of Oriental, or Ottoman, carpets, regarded as one of the richest collections in Europe. This makes a prominent city landmark the home of a collection whose significance extends beyond Brașov.

Culture

The Museum of the First Romanian School is located on the grounds of St. Nicholas Church in the historic Șchei district. Its museum building is a historic monument dating from the 15th century. The site therefore connects the historic Șchei district with a building whose origins reach back to the Middle Ages.

The Romanian Art Gallery of the Muzeul de Artă Brașov displays more than 100 paintings and sculptures in six halls. The works are arranged according to chronological and stylistic criteria, meaning that the exhibition combines two different organizational principles. In addition to the number of exhibition rooms, the gallery's layout is therefore also defined by this dual arrangement.

At the Bastionul Țesătorilor, a permanent exhibition presents the architectural history of Brașov through three models. The models depict the medieval city, the modern city and the workers' city. In this way, three different stages in the development of the same city are shown side by side in one exhibition. After its restoration in 1910, the Bastionul Țesătorilor became a museum.

The Brașov County History Museum preserves extensive archaeological and historical collections. These include finds from the Middle Paleolithic, pottery and tools from the Iron Age, as well as finds from the Roman forts near Râșnov and in the Olt Valley. The holdings thus range from very early traces of human presence through the Iron Age to finds from the Roman era, while also covering several locations in the wider surrounding region.

Every year, the traditional Junii Brașovului event, known as “Coborârea în Cetate,” takes place in Șcheii Brașovului during the Romanian Orthodox Easter holidays. On Duminica Tomii, it includes a horse parade through the streets of the fortified city of Brașov. The event is therefore tied to a specific part of the Easter holidays.

Brașov is an important railway hub with frequent train connections from other cities in Romania. Daily connections also operate to European capitals such as Budapest, Vienna and Prague. The city is therefore integrated into both Romania's domestic railway network and European rail traffic.

Nature

Muntele Tâmpa is a protected natural area for which a dedicated ecotourism guide has been created. Brașov Zoo is home to more than 380 animals from 110 species. The zoo's visitor facilities also include a planetarium, bringing wildlife and an astronomy offering together in one location.

The official Salvamont mountain rescue service operates an easy, 2-kilometre route from Valea Cetății (“La Iepure”) via Vârful Tâmpa and Șaua Tâmpei back to Valea Cetății (“La Iepure”). The route takes one hour. It is therefore described as a circular route with clearly named starting and return points.

The cultural institutions differ in period, collection and form of presentation: the carpets of the Black Church are followed, among other things, by a historic monument, artworks arranged chronologically and stylistically, three city models, and archaeological finds from different eras. Alongside these are independent nature and leisure offerings, including Muntele Tâmpa, the zoo, the planetarium and the route described above.
