The Ghimbășel River runs through Ghimbav and gave the town its Romanian name. Ghimbav brings together sacred architectural history, local customs, mountain views and various activities as distinct themes.

Culture

The Evangelical fortified church of Ghimbav is a Gothic basilica that was created in the 15th century through the reconstruction of an earlier Romanesque building. Its Gothic interior is covered with ornamental floral paintings from 1902, extending across the walls and vaults.

The Orthodox Church of “Sfânta Treime” in Ghimbav was built in 1780 from rubble stone and brick through the work of the parishioners and with a contribution from the merchant Ioan Boghici of Brașov. Its tower is 15 metres high and was completed in 1830. Fragments of the original wall paintings have been preserved on the interior walls.

Zilele Ghimbavului celebrates local traditions and customs and takes place every year on the first weekend after the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul. The sacred themes can be considered in terms of architecture, interior and customary tradition. This arrangement keeps the different impressions separate and makes it easier to set the cultural focus of your own planning.

Landscape

From Ghimbav, there are views of the nearby mountain peaks Postăvarul, Măgura Codlei and Cristianul Mare, as well as, in the distance, the Bucegi Mountains, Piatra Craiului and the Făgăraș Mountains. The distinction between nearby peaks and distant mountain ranges gives the landscape a clear spatial layering when you compare different impressions. The names mentioned mark a range from the immediate surroundings to the more distant mountain horizon.

Activities

The cycling loop “Ghimbav – Râșnov – Cheișoara – Rezervaţia de stejari seculari – Ghimbav” starts in Ghimbav. At Aeroclubul Ghimbav “Mircea Zorileanu”, courses in pilot training and parachuting are organised.

The loop and air sports can be classified as two clearly distinct activity themes. Those combining several interests can consider the route and the range of courses separately in their daily planning, without anticipating an order.

The two offerings also differ in their form: the loop connects several place and landscape names in a defined sequence, while the aeroclub brings pilot training and parachuting together in courses. This keeps the route and the course offering legible as separate themes.

For a stay in Ghimbav, a hotel comparison places travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions side by side. These three details offer different perspectives on your own planning: the period, the desired room layout and the flexibility in case of changes can each be considered separately.

More places: Recea, Cheia, Bunești, Cristian, Tărlungeni, Șirnea, Prejmer and Predeluț.

Getting there
