Șirnea is considered a pastoral settlement at the foot of the Piatra Craiului Mountains, at an elevation of 1,244 metres. The place became known as Romania’s first tourist village; biology teacher Nicolae Frunteș initiated a project to promote tourism for this purpose. Șirnea thus brings together a clearly defined settlement type, a location at the foot of the mountains and a history of tourism associated with the village.
Nature and surroundings
The Poarta Carpaților network comprises nine signposted ecotourism trails totalling approximately 100 kilometres and includes Șirnea. For hiking and finding your way around the mountain landscape, this network of trails is therefore central, although its total length is explicitly stated only as an approximate figure. The signposted trails provide a distinct landscape focus alongside the individual natural and scenic attractions in the surrounding area.
The La Chisatoare waterfall and the Biserica Poiana Mărului church are located near Șirnea. The peaks of Coltul Paltinisului, Galma Iorghii and Galma Sparturilor are also situated in the immediate vicinity. Further afield in the region are Mânăstire Predeal Monastery, as well as the Biserica Paltin and Biserica Şinca Nouă churches. The destinations mentioned therefore range from a waterfall and mountain peaks to religious buildings in areas classified at different regional levels.
Culture and local traditions
Focul lui Sumedru, also known as Focul de Sânmedru, takes place in Șirnea every year on the night of 25–26 October; locals and tourists take part. The foundations of the Muzeul Etnografic, Olimpic și de Artă Contemporană „Nicolae Frunteș” Șirnea were laid in 1965. The cultural profile therefore encompasses both an annual celebration with a traditional name and a museum history dating back to 1965.
The Măsura Laptelui celebration took place on 5 July 2026 in its 57th edition; for the celebration announced for 5 July 2026, visitors were expected to be able to sample bulz, cheese, milk and other traditional products from local residents. The date, edition and regional products planned are among the specific features of this event.
Cycling and trails
The Șirnea – Cheile Dambovicioarei – Valea Seaca a Pietrelor – Șirnea cycling loop is considered generally easy and manageable for amateurs. The Fundata–Șirnea–Fundata cycling loop is considered relatively easy, is approximately 15 kilometres long each way and has a total elevation gain of 250 metres. The two loops therefore differ in the route named, as well as in the information explicitly available about distance and elevation gain.
Classic mountain bikes can be rented in Șirnea daily from 09:00 to 20:00; reservations should be made at least 24 hours in advance. Individual e-bike tours with an accompanying guide can be arranged on request. For planning the day, the MTB rental opening hours, the advance reservation period and the option of a guided e-bike tour can therefore be considered separately.
Hotels in Șirnea can be compared based on your travel dates, preferred room category and cancellation conditions. These three details provide a factual accommodation framework alongside the information on nature, culture and cycling routes described above. Further destinations: Fundata, Ghimbav, Prejmer, Șercaia, Predeluț, Cincșor, Racoș and Deutsch-Weißkirch.
