Chiojdu: Trails, Culture and Nature

Trails and Getting There

A marked trail leads from Bâsca Chiojdului to the Trovanții din Chiojdu. First, you cross a metal bridge over the Bâsca River; the route is considered easy to moderately difficult and takes 60–90 minutes. The BA hiking trail connects the settlement of Chiojdu with the Trovanţii De Chiojdu and climbs the western slope of the Chiojdu hill. The trail has an elevation gain of about 300 m and takes approximately 1–1.5 hours.

The longer Casa cu Blazoane–Lacul Vulturilor route is 29 km long and runs exclusively along municipal roads or forest tracks. Another route from Casa cu Blazoane to Tabla Buții connects the Munții Siriu mountain range with the Munții Ciucaș mountain range. The differences in starting point, duration, route length and elevation gain help you compare different day-trip distances objectively, without combining the trails into a single tour. The respective surface is also a separate point of comparison, as the longer connection runs along municipal roads or forest tracks.

When planning a day trip, the routes can be assessed according to several independent details: duration and elevation gain are the main considerations for the shorter trails, while the 29 kilometres as well as municipal roads and forest tracks characterize the longer route. The connection between two mountain ranges provides a separate spatial reference point.

Length, time, elevation profile and trail conditions can be considered separately and side by side when classifying the routes. This keeps the marked access route to the Trovanții, the ascending BA trail and the two longer connections recognizable as different types of routes.

The journey to Chiojdu follows the DN 10 from Gura Bâscei, then the DJ 102B towards Calvini, and onward via the DJ 102L towards Cătina and Chiojdu.

Culture and Architectural Heritage

Casa cu Blazoane is a historic monument of national importance with the registration code BZ-II-m-A-02383. It was built in the mid-18th century by the Izbășoi, free farmers with extensive landholdings; the building was extended in 1823.

A replica of Casa Codescu was built in 1936 at the “Dimitrie Gusti” Village Museum in Bucharest. Casa Codescu itself stands on a massive foundation made of river-stone masonry; the cellar and the tool room are located inside it. The traditional farmsteads in Chiojdu consist of a dwelling house with a cellar and outbuildings for storing fruit and wine. Thus, the architectural heritage focuses both on individual historic buildings and on the structure of traditional farmsteads.
