Târgu Secuiesc: Courtyards, Museums and Churches

In the historic centre of Târgu Secuiesc lies an oval former market square from which 73 so-called “udvarterek”, or cul-de-sacs, radiate. The inner courtyards are narrow lanes 2–4 metres wide and 25–180 metres long. The width and length figures give you a concrete impression of the different scales of this unusual layout.

Culture

The Guild Museum displays tools, products and workshop equipment used by traditional potters, shoemakers, tanners, furriers, blacksmiths, locksmiths, hatmakers, tailors and carpenters. A separate room is dedicated to documents from the 1848–1849 Revolution. Almost 200 dolls wear mostly Hungarian folk costumes, represent nearly all regions of Transylvania and span approximately a century. The variety of trades and the doll collection place different aspects in focus: in one case, tools and products take centre stage, while in the other, costumes and regional diversity are highlighted.

The Pharmacy Museum is located on the upper floor of the so-called Finta House, Courtyard 12, Number 1. Its collection includes furnishings and equipment from Pharmacies 24 and 52 in Târgu Secuiesc dating from the period after 1949 and was supplemented by the collection of Dr Boga Olivér. It is one of four pharmacy museums in Transylvania.

History

The Reformed Calvinist church was built between 1770 and 1782 in the Baroque and Neoclassical styles on the foundations of an early 17th-century wooden chapel. Its current organ dates from 1861 and was made by organ builder Kolonics István. Construction of the Baroque Catholic church began in 1701, and it was consecrated in 1796 in honour of the Holy Trinity. At the churches, architectural history and music history come together.

Events

The Vigadó Cultural Centre was built in 1902–1904 on the north-western side of the historic centre. It has a theatre auditorium with 400 seats and a conference hall with 150 seats. The sizes of the two halls distinguish a theatre space from a conference room.

In connection with the Turóczi-Mózes Memorial House, 64 of Gábor Áron’s 70 cannons were cast here between January and June 1849. Annual commemorative ceremonies marking the anniversaries of his birth and death take place at the statue of the craftsman Turóczi Mózes. On the second Saturday of every month, a market for traditional Szekler products takes place in Târgu Secuiesc.
