BaÅŸcov: Churches, Hills and Valleys

Bașcov combines a specific historical testimony with the landscape of the Sopot commune. The Church of Saint Dumitru and Saint Nicholas in Bașcov dates from 1842 and is listed as a historic monument under code DJ-II-m-B-08185. The place is therefore defined by both a dated sacred building and its surroundings along the Raznic River.

Culture and History

The village of Sopot also has a distinct ecclesiastical destination: it is home to an Orthodox church dedicated to the Holy Emperors, dating from 1890. The La Bărzuica archaeological site is also located within the Sopot commune. It lies west of the village of Sârsca, on a hill. The two churches and the archaeological site belong to different historical points of reference and can therefore be considered separately.

Landscape and Local Character

Bașcov belongs to the Sopot commune, which is characterised by low piedmont hills and narrow valleys. The valleys mentioned include Valea Rece, Valea Mare and Valea Buciumului. The Raznic River is another geographical reference point for the commune. In the specific local landscape, the houses of Bașcov are scattered on both sides of the hills; some are partly hidden by trees.

The settlement structure includes small traditional farmhouses with low rooms and earthen floors. This architectural style exists alongside the scattered location of the houses and complements the larger landscape features of hills, valleys and river. In this way, the information about the wider commune area is clearly distinguished from the details that directly describe the village of Bașcov.

Roads and Route Connections

Several traditional descriptions of roads and paths place Bașcov within its immediate surroundings. The municipal road project DC 73 covered the DJ606–Bașcov section from km 0+000 to km 4+870. The route specification therefore refers to a clearly defined section, not to the entire road network of the settlement.

A path from Beloț to Bașcov passed through the valley named after the settlement, Valea Bascovului, and wound between the hills. In addition, access to Bașcov led from the road through the same valley. Both details refer to Valea Bascovului but describe different connections: one the route from Beloț to Bașcov, and the other the access from the road to the settlement.

A road project planned with EU funding, covering 8 km, was intended to improve access between Sopot, Bașcov and Pietroaia. It provided for 4.5 km of asphalt road and 3.5 km of gravel road. The different lengths and surfaces of the road sections give the project its own technical structure. Together with the DC 73 section and the routes through Valea Bascovului, they create a differentiated picture of the road connections mentioned.
