Culture and Churches
The Molnár István City Museum in Cristuru Secuiesc combines several thematic areas in its permanent exhibitions. On display are archaeology and local history, as well as an open-air ethnographic section, a hall dedicated to industrial technology and an underground exhibition on local agriculture. Other areas focus on ceramic art and the flora and fauna of the region.
The churches of Cristuru Secuiesc also span different periods of construction. Construction of the Roman Catholic church began in the 14th century. The sanctuary of this church that still exists today was built in 1458. The present-day Unitarian church was built between 1782 and 1792 in several construction phases. Thus, sacred buildings from different centuries stand side by side within the local cultural offering, without equating their respective construction histories.
Gyárfás Mansion
The Gyárfás Mansion in Cristuru Secuiesc is a historic monument built from 1728 onward and is associated with the Hungarian poet Petőfi Sándor. Petőfi spent his last night there before disappearing during the Battle of Albești in 1849. The mansion has been restored.
Following its restoration, the Gyárfás Mansion serves as a cultural and tourist venue. The ground floor houses a permanent exhibition on the history of the building and its connection to Petőfi Sándor, as well as temporary exhibitions and cultural events. The mansion is part of the “Ruta Curiilor”, a cultural and tourism route in the national “România Atractivă” programme. For temporary exhibitions and events, the current dates should be checked before visiting.
Events and Music
In Cristuru Secuiesc, the local authorities hold commemorative events for Petőfi Sándor every year on 31 July. These include serving polenta with milk and cheese as the poet’s last meal, as well as a bicycle tour to Albești, the site of the 1849 battle. The date, event times and programme are decisive for specific travel planning and can be checked again before arrival.
The brass band of Székelykeresztúr performs approximately 30 times per year on average. This figure is an estimate; current performance dates therefore cannot be derived from the annual average.
Routes and Peaks
The “Székelykeresztúr downtown – Jézuskiálto top” circular route is intended for walking or hiking. The “Circular route around Székelykeresztúr and northern villas” is a cycling route. The two routes therefore belong to different modes of transport. For hiking and cycling routes, current route conditions should be checked before setting out.
Several peaks are located around Cristuru Secuiesc: Vârful Stejarului, Vârful Spre Cetate, Vârful Pietros and Vârful Aramei. Each of these four peaks is classified as a peak in the vicinity of Cristuru Secuiesc.
