Discover Odorhellen: Museum, Fortress and Calvary

Odorhellen can be explored through specific sites and formats. The Haáz-Rezső Museum holds a folk-art collection comprising almost 4,000 items, which has been open to the public since 1913. The central urban area is also home to the Székelytámadt Fortress, the oldest secular monument in Odorheiu Secuiesc. Culture

The Haáz-Rezső Museum focuses on the ethnography, local history, art and natural sciences of the central Szeklerland. The collection and these four fields offer different approaches to regional topics, ranging from everyday life and local history to artistic and scientific content. From 1972 onwards, a series of Szekler gates was erected on the Seiche grounds of the Haáz-Rezső Museum; this marked the beginning of an open-air museum.

History

The Székelytámadt Fortress had an approximately square layout with bastions at the corners, two roundels and a gate tower. These architectural features describe the complex through its basic form and individual defensive elements. Together with its location in the central urban area, the fortress forms an independent historical point of reference within Odorheiu Secuiesc.

Routes

The Szekler Calvary is a Way of the Cross with 14 stations carved into rocks approximately two metres high. The stations lie along the forest path leading to the Ugron Chapel. The Way of the Cross, forest path and chapel therefore form a clearly recognisable sequence, while the 14 stations carved into the rocks shape the path itself. The route connects the individual stations with access to the chapel without equating the different components of the site.

Events and Models

The Szejke Folk Music and Folk Dance Festival takes place every year; the participating ensembles perform at several venues throughout the city area. Its recurring schedule and distribution across several venues distinguish the festival from a single fixed sightseeing point. In an open-air exhibition, Mini Transylvania Park displays scale models of more than 80 significant castles, fortified churches, manor houses and other monumental buildings in Transylvania. The focus here is not on a single building, but on an exhibition featuring many miniature structures and different types of buildings.

Chapels

The Ugron Chapel on the Nagymál Ridge is the tomb of the Ugron family, an old Szekler family of historical significance. The Jézus Chapel is located at the southern entrance to Odorheiu Secuiesc, at the end of Szálvátor Hill, in the former Gyárosfalva area, and is surrounded by a protective wall. The two chapels thus point to different historical contexts: the Ugron Chapel is associated with a family tomb, while the Jézus Chapel is characterised by its location and the preserved protective wall.
