Sâncrai: Church, Festivals and Landscape at a Glance

Those wishing to discover Sâncrai culturally will find two areas of interest there: the Roman Catholic church and Szentkirályi bobbin lace. Sacred history and local craftsmanship represent different facets of the place.

Culture and History

The Roman Catholic parish of Sâncrai is dedicated to Saint Stephen, the holy king. The Roman Catholic church of Sâncrai was built between 1796 and 1799 on the site of an older church. A painting on the main altar of Sâncrai's Catholic church shows Saint Stephen presenting his crown to the Virgin Mary.

Local craftsmanship also has its own history extending beyond the region. Within a short time, Szentkirályi bobbin lace became known not only in the country but also abroad. Under the name Székelyszentkirály, the place is also a member settlement of the Szent Király Szövetség.

Events

A meeting of the Szent Király Szövetség began in the church garden of Sâncrai with an open-air mass. The programme of the Sâncrai Lavender Festival included cultural events, community programmes, competitions, food, concerts and an outdoor party. The range of this festival therefore extends from community and cultural events to music and socialising.

The 2025 Szent István Napok programme included sports championships, a cooking competition, children's programmes, skill games for adults, performances by folk dance groups, concerts and parties. Those planning their stay around events can therefore focus on different areas: sport, cooking, activities for children, folk dancing, games or music.

Surroundings

The Muzeul Municipal Haaz Rezso Odorheiu Secuiesc, a museum, is located in the surroundings of Sâncrai. The Mânăstirea Romano-Catolică Odorheiu Secuiesc, a monastery, is also located in the surrounding area. The Monumentul Eroilor, a memorial, and the Monument Statuia lui Orban Balazs are likewise located in the surroundings of Sâncrai.

The Culmea Laz peak lies in the immediate vicinity of Sâncrai. The peaks Dâmbul Mare, Vârful Cetatea Buda and Vârful Capul Popii are also located in the surrounding area. For geographical orientation, a distinction must therefore be made between the immediate vicinity of Culmea Laz and the wider surrounding area with the other three peaks.

As of 16 September 2025, the rebuilt bridge over the Bosnyák stream in Sâncrai was scheduled to open to traffic on 17 September 2025.
