Buhalnița: Churches, Ruins and Archaeological History

Buhalnița combines an archaeological site with church- and ruin-related heritage spanning several centuries. The Buhalnița-Cetățuia site includes a Geto-Dacian fortification from the La Tène period, dated to the 5th to 3rd centuries BC. It is located on a hill southwest of Buhalnița.

Culture

The church history of Buhalnița includes the Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God, built in 1836, and the founding of a church in 1629 by Prince Miron Barnovschi on the site of a wooden monastery church. The ruins of Hanul Cantacuzino-Pașcanu are also located in Buhalnița. They date from the early 19th century, from the period between 1801 and 1811.

History

The former monastery church of Buhalnița was dismantled in 1958 during the extensive relocation of villages in the area of the reservoir of the Bicaz-Stejaru hydroelectric power plant. It was subsequently rebuilt at a higher location. Its foundation, dismantling and reconstruction therefore belong to different points in time within the same church history.
