Discover Iaşi: Literature, Monasteries and Parcul Copou

A literary trail in Iaşi begins with Bojdeuca: it opened on 15 April 1918 as Romania’s first literary memorial museum. Ion Creangă lived there from July 1872 until his death on 31 December 1889.

Culture

The Muzeul Mihai Eminescu comprises three rooms, two on the ground floor and one upstairs. The book collection contains editions of Eminescu’s works, from the first edition published in 1884 to more recent editions, as well as monographic studies, critical analyses and translations of his poems.

Casa Dosoftei currently displays a liturgical book printed in 1508 by the Serbian hieromonk Macarie. Today’s Palace of Culture was built through the reconstruction of the princely palace of Moldavia between 1906 and 1925. It stands on the site of the former princely court of Iaşi, which is documented as early as 1434.

At the Palace of Culture, the carillon in the clock tower plays “Hora Unirii” on the hour. The different historical periods and forms of collection provide concrete points of comparison when you consider several cultural sites according to their respective focus.

Monasteries and Spiritual Heritage

The exterior façade of the Sfinții Trei Ierarhi Monastery is carved in stone and divided into 30 different horizontal decorative bands. The pronaos contains burial niches for the family of Vasile Lupu as well as for the princes Dimitrie Cantemir and Alexandru Ioan Cuza. The monastery was built by Prince Vasile Lupu between 1637 and 1639.

Today, the Golia Monastery houses a small ethnographic museum in an old house where Ion Creangă lived. The monastery’s bell tower has 120 steps; its terrace offers a panorama over Iaşi.

The Muzeul Mitropolitan was established in 2016 in the basement of the Catedrala Mitropolitană. Its seven thematic rooms include the Sala Sinaxar, the Sala Ofranda, the Sala Ctitorilor, the Sala Ekklesia, the labyrinthine passage known as Calea Crucii, the Sala Istoria Duhovnicească a Moldovei and the Sala Baptisteriu.

The Feast of Saint Parascheva on 14 October is associated with the city days of Iaşi; a major Orthodox pilgrimage takes place at that time.

Teiul lui Eminescu is more than 460 years old. Parcul Copou is the oldest park in Iaşi and in Moldavia and has five entrances.

The traditional annual exhibitions at the Grădina Botanică “Anastasie Fătu”, featuring scientific collections of cultivated plants, are particularly popular with tourists from Romania and abroad.
