Culture and History

The Biserica Sfântul Prooroc Ioan Botezătorul was funded and built between 1912 and 1913 by Ion and Florea Olteanu. The Situl arheologic Chitila-Cărămidărie has revealed historical remains from prehistory, the Bronze Age, the Dacian period, the period of the Roman conquest and the Middle Ages. The archaeological investigations of this site included the area of the former brickworks and the area where the Parcul Dendrologic is now located.

A Bronze Age settlement belonging to the Tei culture has been documented at Chitila Fermă. Three residential and workshop buildings from the Tei culture were also identified there; iron ore was reduced and iron, bronze, silver and copper were processed in them.

A Carpato-Dacian settlement dating from the 2nd to the 5th century AD has also been archaeologically documented at Chitila Fermă. Thus, in addition to the Bronze Age Tei culture, a settlement from a considerably later period has been recorded at this site. The historical points of interest therefore range from early archaeological finds to buildings, transport history and memorial sites from more recent times.

Another historical reference is Fortul Kitila: King Carol I built it as the first fort in the defensive ring around Bucharest and personally inaugurated it. Gara Chitila railway station is also part of this history; it was the first station on the old royal railway line connecting Bucharest with Târgoviște.

The commemorative culture includes the plaques of the Obelisc în memoria Eroilor căzuți în primul război mondial Chitila: they list 28 heroes who fell in the First World War and also commemorate heroes from Chitila who fell in 1944. In the same green area as the Cruce memorială Chitila Ilfov memorial stands a stone memorial cross, approximately 15 metres from the obelisk.

Nature and Walks

The Parcul Dendrologic din Chitila (Arboretum) is located at Strada Păcii 69 in Chitila and is open from 08:00 to 22:00. Parcul Dendrologic Chitila is considered a place for relaxing walks and picnics; visitors can also see numerous ornamental tree and shrub species there.

The valley of the Mangul stream is included in the list of protected natural areas.
