Geographical location
The tourist route from Baia Mare to Ocna Șugatag is 55 km long and paved. One variant leads via Breb, another via Desești, Hărnicești and Hoteni.
Nature
Lacul Gavril is part of the tourist circuit of Ocna Șugatag’s anthropogenic salt lakes. Pădurea Crăiască is a 49-hectare protected natural area and served as a seed reserve for oak and larch species. The area combines oak, sessile oak and larch with other tree species and is home to monumental oaks that are more than 250 years old.
The themed trail “Poteca de povești” leads through the forest. It provides information and stories about the old trees, the diverse birdlife and the wood tradition of Maramureș. The trail begins at the information center in the center of the Ocna Șugatag spa resort and can be walked in about half an hour.
In clear weather, Creasta Cocoșului is reflected in Tăul Morărenilor; the area contains special terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The area is protected because of its botanical species as well as its bird and aquatic fauna, including the round-leaved sundew.
The mountain “Vârful Vălenilor,” the summit “Vârful Sefirul,” the mountain “Dealul Pietrăriei” and the summit “Vârful Osului” are located in the surroundings of Comuna Ocna Șugatag. Tinovul și Tăurile Hoteni is a protected natural area.
Culture
“Tânjaua Hotenarilor” is a spring festival with an agricultural tradition held annually in Hoteni on the second Sunday in May. It celebrates the first farmer to begin plowing and includes a procession with decorated Tânjele.
The wooden church “Cuvioasa Paraschiva” is located in the center of Sat-Șugatag on the left bank of the Mara River. The church “Biserica Sfântul Nicolae” is located in the immediate surroundings of Comuna Ocna Șugatag. The monastery “Mânăstirea Budeşti” is located in the surroundings of Comuna Ocna Șugatag, as is the church “Biserica Naşterea Maicii Domnului” in the immediate vicinity.
The Greek Catholic wooden church “Sfinții Arhangheli Mihail și Gavril” in Breb is a historic monument dating from 1622. The route through Breb highlights the traditional rural architecture of Maramureș as well as traditional pastoral and domestic activities. The wooden church is documented as having an extensive collection of icons from the 17th to the 19th century.
