Baia Mare – Culture, Mining History and Astronomy

Baia Mare combines a concrete testimony to its medieval urban history with museums, landscape sites and facilities for science and astronomy. The Bastionul Măcelarilor is the only surviving tower of Baia Mare’s former medieval fortification system.

Culture

The Muzeul Satului is an open-air museum with vernacular buildings from the ethnographic regions of Chioar, Maramureșul Istoric, Lăpuș and Codru. This collection includes traditional houses as well as agricultural outbuildings. The presentation is complemented by technical installations: an oil mill, a cider press and a threshing machine are also part of the museum. This places different forms of rural construction and working life side by side, from residential buildings and farm buildings to equipment and installations.

The Muzeul Județean de Mineralogie "Victor Gorduza" Baia Mare presents a visual and interactive overview of the history and geological characteristics of the Baia Mare–Maramureș mining region. The presentation thus combines two perspectives: it addresses the history of mining as well as the geological characteristics of this region. Dealul Florilor is a peak in the vicinity of Baia Mare. Astronomy and Events

The Observatorul Astronomic Baia Mare enables live observation of the cosmos through its telescopes and rotating mechanical dome. Since the 2005/2006 season, the Teatrul Municipal Baia Mare has organized the Festivalul Internaţional de Artele Spectacolului ATELIER. ASTROMANIA is a camp for astronomy and applied science held annually in July. Alongside the observatory, there are therefore two differently framed details in terms of timing and organization: ATELIER has been associated with the municipal theater since the 2005/2006 season, while ASTROMANIA takes place annually in July as a camp for astronomy and applied science.
