Moisei: Culture, Landscape and Accommodation

Geographically, Moisei is defined by three points of reference: the Maramureș Depression describes the wider landscape, the Rodna Mountains provide the connection to the mountains, and the floodplain of the Vișeu River represents the connection to the watercourse. The Moisei Monastery had been a center for ecclesiastical painting since the 17th century. The wooden church “Adormirea Maicii Domnului” of the former “Izvorul Negru” monastery complex holds a special architectural position. It is the only wooden church in Maramureș with an externally hexagonal polygonal altar. The distinctive feature therefore lies not generally in the use of wood, but in the specific form of the externally visible altar and its place among the wooden churches of Maramureș. The village is also home to the Monument of Moisei by the sculptor Vida Géza, with twelve stone figures: Two depict human faces, while ten wear traditional masks from the region. Carved wooden gates are also among the local features that can be admired in Moisei. Thus, alongside church architecture, sculpture and traditional woodwork represent different forms of expression in the village.

The House of the Martyrs of Moisei illustrates the events of October 14, 1944. On that day, 29 Romanian patriots were murdered there by Horthy’s troops. The historical connection is therefore tied to a specific date, a particular location, and a clearly stated number of victims.

There is also a route from Dealul Moiseiului to Izbucul Izei. It follows the upper course of the Iza through the Rodna Mountains National Park within the municipality of Moisei. The route from Dealul Moiseiului to Izbucul Izei covers approximately nine kilometers. According to the route description, it follows a severely damaged forest road that is passable by an all-wheel-drive vehicle.
