Culture and history
The Muzeul de Istorie și Etnografie Vișeu de Sus was opened to the general public for visits on 1 December 2003. Using objects and illustrations, including reproductions of documents and photographs, the history section presents a summary of local history. The material is arranged in five display cases and on nine glass walls.
Using old photographs and wooden objects, the ethnographic section of the Muzeul de Istorie și Etnografie Vișeu de Sus documents the main traditional activities of the local population: agriculture, livestock farming, forestry, the processing of hemp and wool, folk art and ceramics. Casa Elefant houses a small library with old books belonging to the former Jewish population.
In the area around Vişeu de Sus is the Bustul lui Mihai Eminescu Săliştea de Sus monument. The Biserica Creştină Baptistă Speranţa church is located nearby. The Mânăstirea Dragomireşti monastery is also in the area, while the Biserica Ortodoxă Vişeu de Mijloc church is located nearby.
The Centrul Documentar-Expoziţional al Nobilimii Maramureşene in Vişeu de Sus has a library containing historical maps, royal diplomas, family trees and other documents from bygone times.
