Poiana Teiului – Water, Wooden Churches and Monasteries

Poiana Teiului and Piatra Teiului mark a specific geographical reference: the limestone cliff lies at the end of the Lacul Izvorul Muntelui reservoir on the Râul Bistrița, has been designated a natural monument in IUCN Category III since 1951, and is now classified as a geological reserve.

Nature

Lacul Izvorul Muntelui, also known as Lacul Bicaz, is a reservoir on the middle course of the Râul Bistrița in Romania’s Eastern Carpathians, 4 km upstream from Bicaz in Neamț County.

Mount Bâlca Roşeni is located in the immediate surroundings of Poiana Teiului. Ceahlău Mountain is located in the vicinity of Poiana Teiului. Toaca Peak is also located in the vicinity of Poiana Teiului. Muntele Stejarul is likewise located in the vicinity of Poiana Teiului.

Orientation

The most important road connection to Lacul Izvorul Muntelui is the Bicaz–Poiana Largului section of DN15.

The Poiana Teiului Viaduct, also known as the Poiana Largului Viaduct, is a road viaduct on national road DN15. At the village of Poiana Largului in the commune of Poiana Teiului in Neamț County, it crosses the end of Lacul Bicaz.

For road orientation, the Bicaz–Poiana Largului section and the viaduct can be considered two separate, clearly named reference points.

Culture

The “Constantin Romanescu” Zoological Museum is located in the village of Dreptu in the commune of Poiana Teiului in Neamț County and was founded in 1927.

The wooden church in Galu was built by local craftsmen in 1818. It features an entirely wooden construction in the Moldavian style with Transylvanian influences.

The wooden church of Mănăstirea Petru Vodă is dedicated to the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel and was completed in 1992. Access to Mănăstirea Petru Vodă is via a forest road branching off from the village of Petru Vodă; the turnoff is on the left when driving from Poiana Largului towards Târgu Neamț.

The grave of Father Iustin Pârvu in Petru Vodă has become a place of pilgrimage.

The monasteries of Schitul Sâhăstria, Mânăstirea Secu and Mănăstire Bistriţa are located in the wider regional surroundings of Poiana Teiului.
