Landscape and setting

Bănești is located in Valea Prahovei, on the northern edge of the Romanian Plain. The town lies approximately 30 kilometres northwest of Ploiești and three kilometres southeast of Câmpina. The commune is situated at an elevation of 395 metres in a hilly landscape at the foot of the Southern Carpathians. The Prahova River and its left-bank tributary, the Doftana, flow through Bănești.

The town’s history is also connected with Valea Prahovei. Between 1431 and 1433, the historic trade route through the valley linked Brașov and Wallachia. Thus, Bănești brings together a landscape on the edge of the Southern Carpathians and a historic transport route whose history reaches back to the 15th century.

Culture and history

The Church of “Adormirea Maicii Domnului” stands in Bănești. The building was completed in 1865 and has a bell tower made of dressed stone. In Urleta, which belongs to the commune of Bănești, there is also the old wooden Church of “Sfinții Voievozi”, which is considered a historic monument.

National road DN1 runs through Bănești. It connects Bucharest, which lies approximately 88 kilometres to the south, with the northwestern part of Romania. Among the local connections is the stone bridge over the Doftana, which links Bănești and Câmpina.

The traditional Festivalul Cireșelor takes place in Urleta. The town belongs to the commune of Bănești. During the festival, local and traditional producers offer participants a range of specific products.
